Obituary

On May 6, 2023 Darryl Patrick Johnson received his angelic wings. Darryl was born on January 24, 1962 to the late Major William Patrick Johnson Jr. and Barbara Rembert Johnson Strickland in Sumter, South Carolina. As the first born, he was doted upon by the women of the family, who were all educators who fostered his early informal education. From these women, Darryl gained his thirst for knowledge and excellency. His grandmother, the late Loretta Keels Rembert, who he called “Granny" and his aunt, Patrycya Tolbert, who he referred to as “Aunt Pat” were second mothers to him. When Darryl was three, his mother married Joe W. Strickland, who became a loving and nurturing stepfather. As a child, Darryl spent several summers traveling with his father who was in the military, and with his Conway family. Darryl and his dad had an endearing bond until his death in 2017. Darryl attended the local schools of Sumter and after graduation from Voorhees University, he moved to the Washington D.C. area for employment. He was employed by the United States Senate as a system analyst until his passing. While in college he joined Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and enjoyed a lifelong relationship with his fraternity brothers. Who was this man after God’s own heart that always saw the agape love in you? Darryl was “that infectious person", to know him was to love him. He was kind, generous and would give you his shirt off his back. Darryl was an avid reader who surrounded himself with books and related podcasts. He was someone who in 2023 was in possession of a library card. Like his dad, his love of music included the classical and gospel genres. Darryl believed in volunteerism. He was affectionately known by his young cousins as “Cousin Uncle Darryl.” Above all, Darryl was a loving son and brother. Those who are commending his loving spirit into the assurance of his eternal rest are the loved ones who have preceded him, his father, and his maternal and paternal grandparents. Those who are left to cherish his memory and rejoice in his victorious life are his loving mother and stepfather Joe and Barbara Strickland; his brother, Joe T. Strickland (Shari); his second mom and maternal aunt, Patrycya Tolbert; his paternal aunts, Mary Alice Crockett, Willa DeWitt and Frankie Brown; one uncle, Charles Johnson Sr. (Celeste); cousins: Rosalyn DeWitt, Sharolyn DeWitt, Alison Crockett, ,Edward “Ted” Crockett III (Kyra), William Pierre Johnson IV (Yvrose), Charles Bernard Johnson Jr. (Kate); the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and family and friends.

The Funeral will be held Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Rosehill Cemetery 11AM.
