Ethel Bell Smith Powell passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at 7:40am.
Ethel, lovingly known as Bunch, was born May 26, 1939 in Nakina, NC to the late Henry Roland and Eulah Bell Long Smith. She accepted Jesus Christ as her savior at an early age and Joined Zion Plain Baptist Church, singing in the choir, ushering, and teaching junior Sunday School.
Ethel was reared in a family whose values were deeply rooted in the church, education and service to mankind. She attended Douglas High School in Tabor City where she graduated salutatorian of her class. Upon graduation, she furthered her schooling at A & T State College (now University), Greensboro, NC, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Education, retiring after 32 years in the Elizabeth Public School System. She left lasting and positive impressions on many students that she taught.
Ethel was joined in holy matrimony to Joseph Powell on February 25, 1960, and to this union, 5 children were born: Michael, Bernard, Donnell, Andre’, Sharon. Their family were faithful members of 2nd Baptist Church in Rahway, NJ for 20+ years. She served in several roles, including deaconess, member of the 2nd Baptist Emergency Choir, and Sunday School teacher.
After retirement, Ethel and Joe moved to Longs, SC, joined Mt. Calvary #2 Missionary Baptist Church, and have been dedicated members for the past 19 years.
Those who shared many joys of her very beautiful life and survive to cherish her precious memories are her husband, Joe, three children, Michael (Stacie), Donnell (Toni – fiance’), and
Sharon (Emanuel – fiance’); 6 grands – Andrea, Aanisah, Isaiah, Xavier, Mia, Marissa, and God-daughter, Dawn Johnson. Sisters, Esther Morse, Clara Vaun Smith, Evelyn Booker (Lee), brothers, Roy Latson Smith (Helen), Ervin Smith, Jerome Smith (Rosa); sisters-in-laws, Arvella Smith, Dr. Shirley Truman Smith, Dr. Swannie Wright, Arlene Waterman, Ruby Powell, and Mavist Powell, AND a host of relatives and friends.
