Mr. James A. Smith was born in Conway, SC on March 6, 1935 to the late Mr. Paul & Carrie Smith. He was the youngest of their union. Jimmy as he was affectionately known by all, attended Whittemore Schools starting in elementary thru high school. He really enjoyed athletics and was part of both the varsity football and basketball teams where by all accounts he was a valuable player. Telling a good joke and making someone laugh was his passion from an early age. His sense of humor also stood out during his entire life to anyone who crossed his path. During high school, he fell in love with his future wife Dorothy Poinsette who preceded him in death earlier this year. James decided to enlist in the US Army, which temporarily took him away from his love. Later they reunited when he attended SC State University where she was enrolled. They were married in 1959. James also enlisted in the Air Force and they were once again separated. But upon completion of his tour and honorable discharge, he joined Dorothy in Harlem USA and they decided to make New York City their home and raised three children; Terrence, Kim & Cedric. Brother Smith was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on November 9, 1979. He served in the congregation for many years as an elder and regular pioneer devoting at least 70 hours each month to the ministry. In his capacity as an elder he imparted Scriptural council that both benefitted and encouraged all in the congregation. He enjoyed an extensive career with the City New York retiring from two different agencies before relocating back to Conway along with Dorothy. During their retirement they enjoyed traveling around the world together and spending time with family (especially their grandchildren). James (Jimmy) departed the earthly world on Friday, November 27th at the home that he loved surrounded by family. He is survived by his children; Terrence, Kim, Cedric (Zuwena), his sisters; Vivian Wilson, Alice Smith, Fredericka Floyd, brother; Billy Smith, sister-in-laws; Mary Poinsette & Ida Poinsette, brother-in-law; Noah Poinsette. goddaughter; Faye Davis-Jones, His beloved grandchildren; Terrence Dario, Dominique Mohansingh, Masani Smith, Kamira Smith, one great grand; Kaliah Dario, along with many nieces and nephews, long term friends and also brothers & sisters in the Kingdom.
