Jimmy “Gene” Floyd died Monday, May 11, 2026 in Conway, SC.
He was the youngest child of the late Eugene and Getha Lee Floyd of Conway. He was born in Conway but spent a significant portion of his childhood in Manhattan, NY. Floyd returned to the public schools of Horry County as a high school student and graduated from Whittemore High School with honors.
He also graduated from Morris College in Sumter, SC. After a brief stint in the Army, he started his professional career as a teacher and coach, teaching first at North Myrtle Beach High School and then Conway High School. He later became the Guidance Counselor/Placement Coordinator at Finklea Career Center where he remained until his placement as assistant principal at Conway High School.
As a retired educator, Floyd was honored for his 1977 accomplishment of becoming the first African American head football coach for Horry County. He also received special recognition by Conway High School at their Ethnic Banquet held during Black History Month in honor of his dedication to be a long serving educator and role model for the African American community.
Viewing will be held Thursday from 2-6 P.M. at Latimer's Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:00 P.M. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Burial, with military rites, will follow in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 P.M. nightly at the home, 363 Bethel Drive, Conway, S.C.
