On August 8, 2025, God’s Heavenly Angels gathered in Charleston, South Carolina. The word was sent down from Glory: “Leroy Sampson has completed his earthly journey, his work is done, and he is ready to come home.” The Lord Himself had requested an immediate and personal audience with His faithful servant. Familiar faces were waiting to greet him: his beloved mother, Willie Mae Sampson, along with many other relatives, friends, and comrades who had gone before. Leroy entered this world on October 17, 1947, in Clayton, North Carolina. His early education began in Clayton before moving to Smithfield, and later to Baltimore, Maryland, where he completed his studies at Emerson High School. Shortly after graduation, Leroy answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. His dedication and leadership earned him the rank of Staff Sergeant before he retired honorably. Following his military service, Leroy embarked on a career as a heavy equipment operator in the Baltimore Harbor, later working as a general contractor and an employee of the United States Postal Service. In Baltimore, Leroy met Margaret Gillon, and after a year of courtship, they were joined in holy matrimony. For the past 29 years, they have shared a marriage built on love, respect, and partnership. Leroy’s spiritual foundation began in North Carolina, where he was a member of Sweet Hope Baptist Church and Piney Grove Baptist Church. His faith remained steady throughout his life, and for the past seven years, he and his wife have been faithful members of Cherry Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Conway, South Carolina. Those who knew Leroy remember his quiet strength, warm presence, and unwavering loyalty. He loved the game of golf and had a long list of golfing buddies who will surely miss his laughter on the greens. He valued hard work, fellowship, and family, always making time to share a smile, lend a hand, or offer wise counsel. Leroy leaves behind to celebrate his life and mourn his loss: his devoted wife, Margaret; two beloved sons, Roy and Chris; a loving stepdaughter, Shaunielle Gillon; and his adored step-granddaughter, Shamia Gillon, with whom he had a very loving relationship. He is also survived by his three loving sisters Winnie Barfield (Joe) of Petersburg, VA; Carolyn Richardson of Newark, NJ; and Lucy Gray of Smithfield, NC; two brothers-in-law, Michael Gillon and Michael Madden; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Madden (Michael) and Kimberly Gillon; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; and a special circle of dear friends. God has prepared for Leroy a welcome gathering unlike any other, a place where there is no more sickness, no more pain, and no more goodbyes. We loved him deeply, we will miss him greatly, but today we also rejoice in knowing that his earthly work is complete and his eternal rest has begun.
