Obituary for Melvin Washington McCray

Melvin Washington McCray, son of the late Matthew and Lannie Bellamy McCray, was born on November 25, 1954, in Horry County, South Carolina. He attended Longs Elementary School and Shallotte High School.

From a young age, Melvin worked as a sharecropper, learning the value of hard work and perseverance. He later discovered his love for cooking and spent many years sharing that gift with others. Melvin worked as a cook at several well-loved restaurants, including Captain John’s, Ella’s, Dockside, and The Boundary House.

Melvin was preceded in death by his father, Matthew McCray; his mother, Lannie Bellamy McCray; four sisters; and one brother.

On Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 8:00 p.m., Melvin departed this life at Sea Coast McLeod Medical Center. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

He leaves to cherish his memory:

Children: Michelle Lance of Clayton, NC; Renee Daley (Orrett) of Little River, SC; Marcus McCray (Crystal) of Thomasboro, NC; Sam Lance (Laura) of Leland, NC; Katrina Jones (Lamar) of Jacksonville, NC; and Katiesha McCray of Calabash, NC

Four sisters: Fleta Bell Wilson, Hazel McCray, Sally McCray, and Rachel Foggie, all of Longs, SC.

One brother: Linwood McCray of Baltimore, MD

Fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren

A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends

His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

The Viewing will be held Thursday, September 18, 2025 at Mt. Calvary # 2  MBC 5-7PM.

The Funeral will be held Friday, September 19, 2025 at Mt. Calvary # 2 MBC 1PM.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
