oy Nelson Brown entered into this world on January 18, 1935 to the late Annie Mae Jackson and Leroy Brown. He was joined into Holy Matrimony with Nancy Louise Smalls, and this matrimony yielded three sons. After Nancy’s death, he remarried to Rebecca Moses. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Brown, one grandson, Rodricus Pyatt, one step son, Bernard Moses, one stepdaughter, Natasha Richardson, two sisters, Odessa Greene and Erma Porter, three brothers Wendell, Stafford, and Thomas Brown, four brothers-in law, Joseph Goins, James F. Moses, Wali Belair, Wesley Moses, one sister-in-law, Dorothy Mitchell. Nelson, as he was affectionately known, joined Greater Gordon Chapel AME Church on January 25, 1953 where he served faithfully until the end as the oldest member. He served in the following capacities: He was an Usher for 35 years, Trustee Board Chairman, Steward Board Chairman, Class #12 Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Church Treasurer, Male Chorus, Gospel Choir, and Building Committee Chairman. God gave him a talent of singing and he used that talent faithfully. He became a member of the Gospel Quartet, The Willing Travelers, that made frequent Sunday appearances on local radio stations. He was also a member of the Murrells Inlet Maryville Singing Group. He joined the Masonic Order at the age of 21 and served for 67 years. He served as Worshipful Master of Staff of Life #341. He was elevated to the 32° at John O. Floyd Consistory #189, A.E.A.O.N.M.S. Kaaba Temple #189. He served as Road Captain of the Motor Patrol, Worthy Patron of O.E.S. Loyal Service Chapter #226, and Knight of Pytagoras, and he was bestowed the Honorary 33° Mason of the United Supreme Council. As a young man he worked at the Wagon Wheel chicken farm and picked oysters out of the Inlet. He was employed by the federal government as a contractor at the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. He also worked for the City of Myrtle Beach. He developed a love for painting. In 1958, he became self-employed as a paint contractor and established his own business, Brown’s Painting. He retired from his profession after 51 years in 2009. During his time as a paint contractor, he was commissioned to paint every 7 Eleven store in South Carolina. Along with his painting business, he established a nightclub, named Oak Grove Snack Bar (Nelson’s). In 1980, he established Brown's Body Shop and Towing. He started riding motorcycles in 1964 and bought his first Harley Davidson in 1968. He became the first black to own a Harley Davidson in the area. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle in community parades and during his spare time. His favorite eatery was The NY Diner and he frequently patronized the Refuel convenience store in Murrells Inlet. Nelson transitioned to reward on October 19, 2022 at Waccamaw Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He leaves to cherish his fondest memories, his loving wife Rebecca M. Brown, two sons Rickey N. Brown (Wanda), Summerville, SC, Rudolph O. Brown (Latisha), Murrells Inlet, SC, two daughters, Regina Johnson (Sherridan), Columbia, SC, Stephanie Sutton (Anthony), Myrtle Beach, SC, a special granddaughter who was raised as a daughter, Hannah N. Richardson of the home, two sisters, Margie Spivey, Myrtle Beach, SC and Victoria Small, Little River, SC, three sisters-in-law, Mary Nesbitt (Benjamin), Hollywood, SC, Mary Gibson and Francis Mallory, Jamaica, NY, three brothers-in-law, Johnny Moses (Almenia), Darlington, SC, Jerry Moses, Brooklyn, NY, and James B. Moses (Lillie Mae), Hartsville, SC; 19 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. “His Lord said unto him, ‘Well done thou good and faithful servant.’” Matthew 25:23
