“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1 On Friday, June 28th God decided to call Bro. Vernon Hickman, Jr. home to rest. He was born on December 9, 1939 to the late Deacon Vernon and Deaconess Velma Long Hickman in Conway, South Carolina. Bro. Vernon was reared in a Christian home and accepted Christ as his personal Savior and became a member of the Mt. Pisgah MB Church, where he served as a former Trustee (overseeing the cemetery), member of the Mt. Pisgah Brotherhood, Senior Choir, and Sunday School. He also volunteered with the Summer Enrichment Program where he would teach the young boys how to tie their ties. He was known as “Mr. V” to the students at the summer camp. He was a quiet and humble servant, willing to lend a helping hand to all. He was a man of very few words but had a big heart. He enjoyed sitting outside sitting under the tree or his shed and “cutting the block” as he would say with his brothers. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He attended Whittemore High School and later moved to Sumter, SC and then to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. While living in Florida, he worked for Keeper King for twenty years. He later relocated back home to Conway and worked with his father and brothers in the family logging business. He was later employed with Burrough Welcome of North Carolina. His final place of employment was with Southern Asphalt Paving Company. Vernon Jr. was joined in marriage to Georgia Ward Hickman and was blessed with three children, Freddie Ward, Georgia Ann Ward, and Brenda Ward. And later, they were blessed with a sweet baby girl, LaShonda Osborne. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Shirley Hickman Butler, Lee Hickman, and Bobby & Billie Ray Hickman; daughter, Brenda Ward; and grandson, LeQuail Ward. He leaves to cherish his fond memories his loving and caring wife, Georgia; son, Freddie; daughters, Georgia Ann and LaShonda; nine grandchildren, Tiffany, Terrell, Shaquilla, Yandell, Toyis, Samantha, Quayshon, Logan and Kennedi; ten great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; a special niece/daughter, Annette Harden (her children, Chanell and Alex); He also leaves behind three brothers, Dea. Lonnie (Sarah) Hickman, Hayward (Terri) Hickman and Dea. Charles (Patricia) Hickman; four sisters, Mildred Welch, Mary (Stewart) Strothers, Carolyn Hickman-Williams, and Linda (Dea. Quantrel) Brown; two brothers-in-law, JB Lewis and Gregory Green; five sisters-in-law, Bertha Osborne, Frankie Osgood, Catherine Wimberly, Retha Osgood and Rose (Dave) Osborne; a host of loving and caring nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
